The 2012 Fine Art & Specie Insurance Conference was held in the wonderful city of Lisbon in Portugal, on the 18th and 19th October 2012.

A number of internationally renowned speakers spoke on various aspects, including speakers from some of the market leading brokers and underwriters, who were joined by speakers from some of the leading players in the Fine Art, Specie and Cash in Transit industry, who gave us their perspective on the insurance market today.

As with all ifasic events, we were lucky enough to have some of the leading players from both within the insurance industry, and the fine art and specie markets address our conference.

Patrick-Bade

Patrick Bade Patrick Bade is Senior Lecturer at Christies Education in London. He has published extensively on 19 and early 20 century art. His new book entitled “Music Wars” about music during the Second World War will by published by East and West Books in the Spring of 2012.

Owen-Carragher

Owen Carragher focuses his practice on the representation of domestic and foreign insurers in matters throughout the United States. His expertise extends to a variety of insurance products, including first party jewellers block & fine arts. As a result of the depth and breadth of his experience, Owen is frequently asked to lecture on insurance, litigation and risk management issues.

Prior to founding Lankler Carragher & Horwitz, LLP , Owen served for seven years as an assistant district attorney in the Rackets Bureau, organised Crime and Narcotics Unit, Special Prosecutions Bureau and Trial Division of the New York County District Attorney’s office.

Simon-Craig

Simon Craig started his career in 1979 in the commercial claims department of the Norwich Union, based in Leeds. He held a number of positions in the UK prior to moving to Italy in 1991. In 1997 Simon went out on his own and set up the The ACME Loss Adjusting & Risk Survey Co. S.r.l.,.

In 2003 Simon co-founded the separate activity of C&N Insurance Services, specialising in the undertaking of coverholder audit assignments and provision of specialist services to Underwriters. Having spent the last twenty-one years of his adjusting career to date in Italy, Simon has handled a wide range of assignments on behalf of Jewellers Block, Cash in transit and fine art Underwriters which has earned him the reputation as one of Italy’s leading experts in the field.

Edward-Crichton

Edward Crichton is the Fine Art Manager for leading provincial auctioneers Lacy Scott & Knight of Bury St Edmunds, overseeing 26 sales annually to include Fine antiques, jewellery, wines, collectors models and C20th Design. He has over 17 years’ experience as an auctioneer and valuer, dealing with the sourcing, research and marketing of antiques, art and collectables for auction. Edward has a broad knowledge base, recent successes include a barn find of classic cars which sold for over £200,000, a Chinese Ruyi sceptre for £130,000 and a Chinese bowl for £73,000. Edward frequently lectures on the world of antiques and auctions.

Lacy Scott & Knight, became an associated company of the Carringtons Partnership in 2010, specialising in Fine Art salvage sales, and has since gone on to handle a number of salvage sales on behalf of various insurance companies and syndicates.

Peter-French

Peter French retired from the UK Police Service in 2005 having performed the rank of A/Divisional Commander. Peter had responsibility for Crime Detection, Intelligence, Crime Reduction, Counter Terrorism and the hijack plans at the UK designated hijack airport. Peter was Chair of the UK Airport Police Commanders Advisory Group examining security terrorism and partnership agency working.

He was also A/Chair of the Crime Group and founder of the UK Airport Police Commanders Crime Reduction Group that allowed for airport Crime Reduction Officers and the industry to share good practice across all major UK airports. Since his retirement Peter has taken up the role of Director of GOLD COMMAND Ltd. GOLD COMMAND offers specialist business development and crime reduction consultancy to companies within the security, counter terrorism, aviation and port sectors. In addition GOLD COMMAND undertakes investigations that include ports and airlines.

Simon-Hornby

Simon Hornby is President, Art Services at Crozier Fine Arts, an industry leader in Fine Arts storage and logistics in New York City. Mr. Hornby is responsible for Crozier’s art storage division and its specialized climate controlled facilities in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, development of new art collection services, liaison with key clients, risk control, and working with insurance and other industry partners.

Before joining Crozier, Simon was Senior Vice President & Executive Director of Global Risk Partners, an international risk control and loss prevention firm specializing in fine art and valuables. Working primarily for insurers and a range of public/private companies and public institutions, Simon travelled extensively and became recognized for the development of risk assessment programs and mitigation strategies

Simon-Hughes

Simon Hughes retired from the Metropolitan Police Service in the autumn of 2011 and set up his company, Crimson Core Consulting, which provides bespoke training and facilitated exercises addressing the threats posed by and the covert operational and negotiation responses required to deal effectively with kidnap and extortion. His clients include UK and foreign law enforcement as well as commercial organisations.

Simon has provided kidnap negotiation training in many countries and presented at kidnap conferences in Europe and the United States and was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for distinguished service in the 2012 New Year’s Honours List.

John-Kennedy

John J. Kennedy is the President of the Jewelers’ Security Alliance, a non-profit trade association with 23,000 members that was founded in 1883. The JSA, which works closely with the FBI and police departments throughout the U.S., is dedicated to helping its members from the jewelry industry avoid burglary, robbery and theft.

Mr. Kennedy is an attorney who joined the JSA full-time in January 1992. Prior to joining the JSA, Mr. Kennedy served as Assistant Commissioner and Deputy General Counsel of the New York City Department of Investigation. He also previously served in a variety of posts in law enforcement, government and academia.

Mark-Lowers

Mark Lowers Mark Lowers is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Lower Risk Group, a provider of enterprise-wide risk mitigation and loss prevention services, employment screening services, and data intelligence through its complimentary companies; Lowers & Associates, Proforma Screening Solutions and Wholesale Screening.

Mark is President of Lowers & Associates, a firm sepcializing in risk mitigation, based in Northern Virgina, with offices in London & Miami. With more than 30 years experience, Mark is an international recognised authority in the field.

Donald-Palmieri

Donald A. Palmieri is a jewellery appraiser and a forensic expert, he is President of the Gem Certification & Assurance Lad, Inc. (GCAL), as ISO 17025 Accredited Laboratory. Don is also President of the Gemmological Appraisal Association, Inc., publisher of Market Monitor®, Chairman of Gemprint Corporation.

Don has worked in all levels of the jewellery and gemstone profession during his 45-year career, attending advanced gemmological and appraisal certifications, including Master Gemmologist Appraiser®. His expertise is regularly sought by law enforcement agencies and insurance companies, for identification, quality rating and valuation of fine gems and jewellery.

Rose-Proby

Rose Proby is an Assistant Vice President handling fine art clients within the Specie team of Marsh Ltd., based in London.

Rose has worked in insurance for the past three years and has experience in many different classes of insurance. Prior to her career in insurance she completed a Masters degree at the Courtauld Institute of Art and worked at the Tate museum.

Whilst studying, Rose completed a number of work placements and internships at many well-known art institutions, including; the Victoria and Albert Museum, Sotheby’s and the Wallace Collection. She also lived in Venice for three months studying art.

Dan-Ribacoff

Dan Ribacoff is a Licensed Private Investigator and a Certified Polygraph Examiner. As the CEO of International Investigative Group, Ltd., Dan has served Underwriters, Adjusters and Attorneys for over 22 years with Jewelers Block, Fine Arts and other Specie investigations though-out the US and the World. Dan’s unique background as a Graduate Gemmologist and many years of law enforcement patrol experience as a member of the NYPD Auxiliary Police have resulted in his being named as “One of the Top 15 Private Investigators in the United States.”

Dan and his firm have been featured on CNN, CNBC, Globo-TV, New York Times, New York Law Journal and many more. He is a skilled Forensic Interviewer and Credibility Assessment professional. He trains attorneys on how to detect deception during depositions and in Continuing Legal Education courses on investigations. He serves as the polygraph examiner for an internationally syndicated TV show.

Christian-Scheidemann

Christian Scheidemann is the Senior Conservator at Contemporary Conservation Ltd., a highly specialized studio for the conservation of contemporary art, based in New York.

Christian studied conservation of paintings and objects, as well as art history, in Germany. For the past thirty years, Christian has been focusing on the conservation of works by artists who have introduced non-traditional materials into their works, namely Robert Gober, Matthew Barney, Paul McCarthy and Chris Ofili. He is a founding member of the International Network for the Conservation of Contemporary Art (INCCA) and the Modern Art Speciality Group at the German Conservators Association (VDR).

Charles-Turner

Charles Turner is the Senior Risk Manager at MIRA Insurance Broker and Consulting GmbH, the in-house broker of Malca-Amit. Malca-Amit is a secure logistics expert, providing services on a worldwide scale. Malca-Amit operates through an international base of offices in over 28 countries along with a global network of partners and affiliates.

Charles commenced his career at Marsh in London, whereby he worked in one of the larger Specie teams in the London Market, before making a switch to MIRA Insurance Broker & Consulting GmbH in Germany. At MIRA Charles handles and manages the Malca-Amit Insurance Portfolio, entailing interaction with London Underwriters on the placing and claims side. Charles also controls and carries out Risk Management Services at major Diamond and Jewellery Exhibitions across the world including, Hong Kong, Las Vegas and Basel.

Stephen-Watters

Stephen Watters started his career in the London insurance market over 35 years ago. Following eight years loss adjusting in the UK he spent seven years adjusting claims in the Middle East. Since 1989 he has lived and worked in Latin America.

In 2000 he founded Stephen Watters International Adjusting Services who are based in Mexico and Chile. He specializes in handling Cash in Transit, Specie and BBB claims for Lloyd’s Underwriters, London & European Reinsurers, principally in Central and South America, as well as the Caribbean.
