The 2018 Fine Art & Specie Insurance Conference was held once again in the wonderful city of Lisbon in Portugal, on the 18th and 19th October 2018.

A number of internationally renowned speakers spoke on various aspects, including speakers from some of the market leading brokers and underwriters, who were joined by speakers from some of the leading players in the Fine Art, Specie, who gave us their perspective on the insurance market today.

As with all ifasic events, we were lucky enough to have some of the leading players from both within the insurance industry, and the fine art and specie markets address our conference.

Rhiannon Alban-Davies

Originally from London, Rhiannon has worked in the Willis Towers Watson Hong Kong office over the last four years. Originally focused on building and growing business for the large accounts book across Asia, she is now responsible for leading and developing the Fine Art Team within Hong Kong and driving business development more broadly within Asia.

Her previous experience in the intelligence and security world has provided her with a deep understanding of the importance of precision analytics, industry knowledge, and strategic risk management. She has worked with a broad plethora of clients, from government authorities and cultural associations, to international galleries and Ultra High Network individuals.

Rhiannon has spoken at both the Hong Kong Gallery Association, Philippine Art Fair, Art Stage Singapore Art Fair and various HNW Banks on Art Insurance topics .

Rhiannon received a B.A. from University College London in Classics and a M.A from Kings College London in Intelligence and International Security.

Tim Carter

Tim has 16 years experience working in the I.T. industry covering various different disciplines. These include software development, infrastructure design and implementation and now cyber security.  Prior to working exclusively in penetration testing, he worked in the defensive disciplines (Blue Team) as a senior SOC engineer and part of the Incident Response team.  Owing to time served in the UK military’s Special Forces, he brought a raft of specialist skills to the team that saw him heading up the physical social engineering engagements. With his blend of technical and non-technical skillsets, he quickly became a valuable part of the ‘Red Team’ and this lead to a full transition into the Offensive services.

Massimo Collu-Marchese

Massimo joined MDD Forensic Accountants in 2014. Originally starting in the Toronto, Canada office, he is now at the firm’s London office.  A damage quantification expert, Massimo concentrates on matters related to business interruption, stock & contents, lost profits, business valuations, personal injury & wrongful death, cyber risks and extra expenses/increased costs. He has been engaged on numerous forensic accounting assignments in the fine art & specie, agriculture, manufacturing, retail and wholesale, medical and dental practices and power generation industries.

Massimo attended Bethel University on an athletic scholarship, where he completed his Bachelor of Science, Accounting degree.

Joris Dik

Joris Dik (*1974, Amsterdam) studied art history and classical archaeology at the University of Amsterdam and received his M.A. in 1997.  From 1995/96 he was a Getty Graduate Intern at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.  After returning to the Netherlands, he graduated with a Ph.D in chemistry in early 2003 at the University of Amsterdam.   Joris continued his academic career at Delft University of Technology.  He set up a research group on materials in art and archaeology at the dept of Materials Science and Engineering.  Joris was promoted to an associate professor in 2006 receiving full tenure.  In 2010 he was appointed Antoni van Leeuwenhoek professor at TU Delft.  Joris received funding through personal research grants of NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.  With these research grants he developed non-destructive imaging techniques for the characterisation of artworks, most notably Macro X-ray Fluorescence Elemental Scanning (MA-XRF).  Joris has collaborated with different partners from academia, large-scale research institutions, museums and industry.  In 2012 Joris was appointed as a member of the Young Academy at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

Robert Erdmann

Prior to earning his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in  2006, Robert Erdmann started a science and engineering software company and worked extensively on computational materials science at Sandia National Laboratories. He subsequently joined the faculty at the University of Arizona in the Program in Applied Mathematics and the Department of Materials Science and  Engineering as Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor, where he worked on multiscale material process modeling and image processing for cultural heritage.  In 2014, he moved to Amsterdam to focus full-time on combining materials science and computer science to help the world access, understand, and preserve its cultural heritage.  He is currently Senior Scientist at the Rijksmuseum, and he holds the Rijksmuseum Chair in Conservation as a Professor at the University of Amsterdam.

Paul Harman

Paul is a highly experienced International Loss Adjuster.  With more than 35 years’ experience in claims handling, he has spent 25 years handling claims in the Caribbean, Central America and South America.

He is now a Director of PHILA, the President of PHILA Central America & Caribbean Inc., and also the CEO of the PHILA Group.

Mark Lowers

Mark Lowers serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Lowers Risk Group, a provider of enterprise-wide risk mitigation and loss prevention, employment screening, and data intelligence services through its four complementary companies: Lowers & Associates, Lowers Forensics International, Proforma Screening Solutions, and Wholesale Screening Solutions. Mark is also a certified fraud examiner and President of Lowers & Associates, a firm specializing in risk mitigation, international risk management, and loss prevention services that provides services to insurance companies, banks, the cash-in-transit industry, and other financial institutions. He has served in this capacity since 2004.

Donald Palmieri

Donald A. Palmieri, jewellery appraiser, forensic expert, consultant and broker, is President and founder of Gem Certification & Assurance Lab, Inc. (GCAL), an ISO 17025 Accredited Laboratory. Don is also the President of Gemological Appraisal Association, Inc., publisher of Palmieri’s Market Monitor®, Chairman of Gemprint Corporation, and is currently serving as Chapter 11 Trustee in a $40 million diamond manufacturer bankruptcy case, appointed by the US Trustee, New York Southern District.

Don has worked in all levels of the jewellery and gemstone profession during his 45-year career, attaining advanced gemological and appraisal certifications, including Master Gemologist Appraiser®.

Bill Perry

A solicitor for 40 years, Bill sits as an arbitrator having been a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators for 35 years. He is a CEDR accredited mediator.

His is an expert in fine art and antiquities, jewellers block and specie matters, dealing with issues like authenticity and provenance, title, loss and theft, valuation issues, damage and alleged damage, insurance coverage and many more.

Thomson Reuters have rated him one of the top 100 lawyers in London along with ratings in Chambers UK, the Legal 500 and Who’s Who Legal over many years.

Calogero Scibetta

With over a decade of experience in strategic global partnerships, Calogero drives Everledger’s partnerships and portfolio of clients within across industries, with an expertise in the fine art, fine wine and luxury goods industries. He ensures the organisation’s consistent and rapid growth in sales across multiple technologies and business verticals.

David Scully

David Scully LL.B.  has 38 years’ specialty insurance experience, 27 in Fine Art & Specie.  He was Underwriting Manager at AXA Art UK and set up and ran XL Catlin’s market leading FAS Asian operation, working in Singapore for 7.5 years where he was heavily involved in Chinese FAS insurance.  He is now an Art Mediator, independent consultant and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Sharon Shefer

Sharon Shefer is a partner at Levitan, Sharon & Co., one of the leading insurance law firms in Israel. She is an experienced litigator who has focused on the specie market for the last 20 years. She acts mainly for the London and German market, and is responsible for some of the Israeli precedents in the JB field.

harry smith

Harry Smith has over 40 years’ experience in all areas of the art world, having acquired Gurr Johns in the mid 1980’s after a career at Christie’s and as an independent advisor. A specialist in Impressionist and Modern Art, Harry advises collectors on the sale and purchase of works of art and has coordinated a number of major valuations, including the Sara Lee Millennium Gift, and the valuation for The United Nations of the losses sustained as a consequence of the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. He is a leading expert witness in art market litigation, and is certified in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Gideon Statman

Gideon Statman holds a MA degree in Archelogy and has worked as a surveyor and loss adjuster since 1988, continuing his late father`s office. He specializes in diamonds and jewelry as well as in other fields. He has dealt with various major claims including ones of multinational type.

William Stockdale

As a Director at S-RM, Will has spent the past seven years working across the risk management sector, advising clients on a range of risks to their organisations and people globally. Within the firm, he has been responsible for the strategy and successful development of various products, teams and business lines. These have included S-RM’s office in South Africa, its proprietary online threat reporting platform, and its ethical hacking business.

David Summers

David is a Chartered Loss Adjuster. He has over thirty years experience in the profession, of which 20 were spent living in the Middle East, before he returned to London with Sedgwick in 2017. He is a member of their Major & Complex Loss team, and handles jewellers block, specie and fine art claims across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, where he also undertakes risk surveys.

Bernadine Bröcker Wieder

Bernadine comes from a background in the commercial art world, part of the core team setting up an Impressionist and Modern gallery in London in 2010.

She co-founded Vastari in 2012, a platform to help museums source content for and circulate exhibitions globally.

Bernadine is a member of the Professional Advisors to the International Art Market and the Worshipful Company of Arts Scholars, on the advisory board for We are Museums and Cromwell Place.

As part of her professional practice, Bernadine has been advocating for innovation and enhanced access to data within fine art insurance realm.

Victor Wiener

Victor Wiener served as executive director of the Appraisers Association of America for 21 years and is currently an appraiser in private practice and founder of the firm Victor Wiener Associates, LLC

He has worked for several international auction houses in London and New York, including Sotheby’s and at Christie’s in Rome, where he was Director of the fine arts department.  A trained art historian, Mr. Wiener has worked at several museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.  He has published extensively and is co-editor and a principal contributor to “All About Appraising”, The Definitive Appraisers Handbook.   He has served as an expert witness in several high profile art cases including matters concerning the estates of Andy Warhol, THE VALUATION OF PICASSO’S DAMAGED LE RÈVE, AND THE VALUATION OF THE COLLECTION OF THE DETROIT INSTITUTE OF ARTS.
