Jeroen ter Brugge
Presentation – The wrecking of HMS Lutine (1799); gain or loss?

Despite the fact that the sinking of the Lutine cost the lives of the entire crew, this disaster is best known for the colossal amount of gold and silver bars and coins that sank to the seabed with it. A treasure that still haunts minds to this day. Lloyd’s of London confirmed its reliable name with the payment of the loss, and the ringing of the Lutine bell in the underwriters’ room keeps the memory of it alive. The presentation covers the disaster and the numerous salvage attempts, the perspectives of stakeholders, the memory of the crew, public perception and the ongoing appeal to fortune hunters and scientists.

Presentation – Bringing Science to BeMA, a New Museum of Twentieth Century Art in Lebanon

While Lebanon is associated with ancient history, it also has a modern and contemporary art scene aided by a French influence that included government support for the arts. This support led to the acquisition and display of art in government buildings throughout the twentieth century. A private not-for-profit foundation, the Beirut Museum of Art (BeMA), now has the responsibility to care for and, for the first time, publicly exhibit this collection spanning more than a century. McGlinchey is helping establish scientific support to care for and exhibit these works by building and guiding connections with local universities and at the same time, exposing students to a profession he has worked in for forty years.
